چکیده

E-institutions are envisioned as facilities on the Internet for heterogeneous software agents to perform their interactions and thus forming truly open agent systems. We investigate how these heterogeneous agents can determine whether an institution is one in which they can participate. We propose a layered approach which is supported through a (traditional) middle agent that is part of the environment. Starting with a basic compatibility of message types, each extra layer ensures a higher degree of compatibility, but requires also extra sophistication in both the information required and the matching algorithms. In this paper, we describe reasoning about how an agent should take on a specific role, message matching, and protocol compatibility. We explore the issues in the context of an actual accommodation agent built in JACK, and a travel agency institution built

Open Giant Intelligent Information Systems and Its Agent-Oriented Abstraction Mechanism

As a new science of complex intelligent information systems, an open giant intelligent information system is a special kind of complex software systems. In this paper, we first presented conception and complexities of open giant intelligent information system, and then we discussed the challenges of agent-based computing for dealing with the above systems’ software complexities. For the facts o...

Developing Role-Based Open Multi-Agent Software Systems

An open multi-agent system (MAS) is a dynamic system in which agents can not only join or leave an agent society at will, but also take or release roles at runtime. Traditional multi-agent system development methodologies are not suitable for developing open multi-agent systems because they assume a fixed number of agents that are specified during the system analysis phase. In this paper, we pr...

Domain-Independent Exception Handling Services That Increase Robustness in Open Multi-Agent Systems

A critical challenge to creating effective multi-agent systems is allowing them to operate effectively in environments where failures ('exceptions') can occur. This paper describes the motivation, progress and plans for work being pursued in this area by the MIT Adaptive Systems and Evolutionary Software research group (http://ccs.mit.edu/ases/). 1. The Challenge: Enabling Robust Open Multi-Age...

Towards open distributed information systems by the way of a multi-agent conception framework

At the heart of cooperation between agents we can nd the notion of agent modeling. The representation one agent maintains of other agents is indeed essential for social reasoning. In order to cooperate, an agent must know how it may cooperate with each of its acquaintances and such knowledge is tightly connected to the known characteristics of another agent. Agent modeling is even more signiica...

Contractual Agent Societies: Negotiated shared context and social control in open multi-agent systems

Information systems for supporting the fluid organizations of the 21 century must be correspondingly open and agile, able to automatically configure themselves out of heterogeneous system components, accommodate the dynamic exit and entry of hitherto unknown participants and maintain system stability in the face of limited trust. This paper introduces the concept of Contractual Agent Societies ...
